Your guide to our logo design process and frequently asked questions.

the logo design process

We pride ourselves on creating custom logo designs that meet each of our customer’s needs. Lara J Designs specializes in helping new businesses get started with a branding package (logo, business cards, letterhead, envelopes, brochures, etc.) A majority of our clients have been pleased with one concept, although more than one concept is recommended for those who would like a variety of designs to choose from. You may always start with one and add more later. Before starting your logo project, please fill out our logo questionnaire. Answering these questions will help ensure a first concept that is as close as possible to the logo design you have in mind for your company.

What is the difference between a raster file and a vector file?2026-01-29T11:18:28-05:00

Raster graphics are made of tiny squares of color called pixels. Every photo you take with your phone is a raster image, and most images you see online are raster too. Common raster file types include JPG, PNG, GIF, and TIFF.

Vector graphics are built from mathematical paths rather than pixels. A line, a curve, or a shape is generated by formulas, not a grid of tiny squares. File types include SVG, AI, EPS, and PDF (when created in vector format).

For a full breakdown of how raster and vector graphics work, along with practical examples of where each is most effective, take a look at our in-depth blog post.

How do I choose a business name for my new logo?2026-01-29T11:14:20-05:00

Understand Your Brand’s Identity

What does your business stand for?
Think about your mission, vision, and values. Your name should reflect the essence of what you do and what you want to convey to your audience.

Who is your target audience?
Consider your ideal customers and the language or tone that will resonate with them. A playful or quirky name may appeal to a different demographic than a serious, professional one.

Brainstorm Ideas

Start with keywords:
List words that relate to your product or service, industry, or the feeling you want to evoke. Use this list as a starting point to combine words, create new terms, or get inspired.

Consider wordplay:
Look for clever ways to combine words or use metaphors, but make sure the name still works on its own. A good name should sound appealing and make sense even if someone doesn’t immediately catch the reference.

Keep it simple:
Short, easy-to-remember names tend to stick better in people’s minds. Avoid overly complicated, hard-to-pronounce, or excessively long names, which can be challenging for domains, social media handles, and logo design.

Check for Availability

Domain name:
Make sure the domain for your chosen name is available. A matching domain makes it easier for customers to find your website. Tools like Namecheap can help you check domain availability.

Social media handles:
Ensure the name is available across key social media platforms. Consistency is key for building brand recognition.

Trademark and business name search:
Before you fall in love with a name, do a quick trademark and business name search to make sure you’re not stepping on anyone’s toes. You can use resources like the Georgia Business Search to confirm that your name isn’t already in use. This step can help you avoid legal issues and confusion down the road.

Test Your Name

Say it out loud:
Does it sound good when you say it? Sometimes, names that look great on paper don’t sound as natural when spoken.

Ask for feedback:
Run your name by a few trusted people (friends, family, or potential customers) to see what they think. You might get useful insights about the name’s appeal and whether it communicates the right message.

Check for double meanings:
Make sure your name doesn’t have unintended or negative meanings in other languages or cultures, especially if you plan to operate internationally. Avoid names that could carry offensive, insensitive, or unpleasant connotations. Your business name should make people feel positively about your brand from the start.

Ensure It’s Brandable

Visual appeal:
Think about how your business name will look in a logo or on marketing materials. Does it lend itself to a strong visual identity? You want a name that’s flexible, visually balanced, and easy to incorporate into a logo design.

Think long-term:
Choose a name that won’t box you in. If your business expands or evolves, will the name still fit? A name that’s too specific to one product or service might limit your ability to diversify in the future.

Make It Meaningful and Memorable

Resonate with your audience:
The best names evoke an emotional response or tell a story. Try to make your name meaningful to your target audience, whether through humor, nostalgia, or a connection to your mission.

Be unique but thoughtful:
A name that stands out from competitors is more likely to be remembered, but avoid names that could be misinterpreted or carry a negative tone. Playful or pun-based names can work beautifully, but they should still sound appealing and professional even without the pun.

Think About SEO

Searchability:
A business name that is easy to search online is important for visibility. Avoid using generic terms that may be hard to rank for on search engines. A unique name makes it easier to appear in search results.

Keywords:
While you don’t want to go overboard, incorporating relevant keywords into your business name can help with search engine optimization (SEO) if it makes sense for your brand.

What is included in the logo design package?2026-01-29T11:14:49-05:00

Our standard logo package includes 12 hours of design time.

The number of hours is based on our many years of experience of how long it takes to complete a logo design project from start to finish, including creating an initial proof, going through 1-2 rounds of revisions, and putting together your final file package.

Our goal is for you to be completely satisfied with your finished logo, so if the first proof isn’t quite there yet, we will be happy to use your constructive feedback to create additional proofs.

When you give us final approval for your custom logo design, we will create a package of all of the file types and logo variations you should need for future projects, as well as a logo color and font guide. All files will be delivered to you via a Dropbox.com link.

How does the logo design process work?2026-01-29T12:29:53-05:00

Step 1: Gathering Information

Please fill out our logo questionnaire below to give us more information about what you have in mind for your new logo. Are there any specific design elements you would like included in your logo? Are there any styles that you love and want to share with us? Does your company have a pre-existing logo that we need to look at to make sure we continue your previous brand colors, etc?

Like all art, design is subjective, so we created the logo questionnaire to learn more about what kinds of designs you do and don’t like, so we can provide you with an initial proof that is tailored to your aesthetic.

Step 2: Designing & Proofing

We will consider the information you have given us, brainstorm, sketch, and work to produce an initial concept. When we have a design ready to show you, we will create one or more proofs.

Once we have developed a digital proof of the logo, we will send it to you for review, and you can let us know if there’s anything you’d like to adjust such as colors or fonts.

Step 3: Completed Logo

Once the logo is approved, we will create all the logo variations and file types you should need, put together a logo font and color guide, and send it all to you via dropbox.
